Open Day

Today was Open Day for Lockleys North Primary School’s 50th birthday.

Open Day is when the school opens (generally during the weekend) for a section of the day to present and showcase their school. The opening of the school can be for various reasons e.g. to attract more people to their school or to just allow people to have a look at the facilities.

At our school’s open day we had guided tours running, a stage with performances and lots of other entertaiment.

What I thought went well at the Open Day……..

  • The guided tours
  • The stage with the performances
  • The titanic blow up slide
  • How all the rooms were open to be viewed

What I thought could of been better……..

  • I thought the layout of open day could have been better set out

Overall I thought open day was a huge success and was really fun.

“What are you listening to?”

For our latest inquiry unit we have had the question “What are you listening to?”

Over the term we have learnt about music as an industry and some other concepts around it.

The final assessment task was to re-create a songs lyrics in a group.

In each group there was 5 people and each person had a different role to play.

One person had to play a double role but still ther roles were

  • Record Company Executive
  • Music Engineer
  • Lyricist
  • Singer
  • Promotions Manager
  • Art Department Head

I thought the task was fun aslong our team got along. I really enjoyed re-making the song and doing the whole aspect of the tasks. Overall I would rate this experience 5/10.

Comment what you thought about our task.

Personal Research Project

Hey,

For one of our Homework tasks and High Flyer tasks we have to do a personal research project.

I chose to do my project on radio controlled models or rc models.

The reason I chose to do this topic is because I like rc models, building them and especially playing and racing them. I also chose it becuase I know quite a lot from building them.

Book Recommendation

Hey,

This post is about a book I am going to recommend to you.

Nightrise.jpg

The book is Night Rise.

This book is the third in the Power of 5 series by Anthony Horowitz.

The series is about Matthew Freeman who is a boy who has power. He is a gatekeeper to hold the Old Ones back. The Old Ones are destroyers of the world who want to make the world a place of darkness. In the acient times there were five gatekeepers who created a gate to hold back the Old Ones in another dimension. Throughout the series Matt finds the Gatekeepers and stops the Old Ones. In the fourth book a war is created and there are more gatekeepers to help stop the Old Ones.

I think this book is action packed cliff hanging and a exciting book to read.

High Flyer Book Reviews

My Two Book Reviews…….

Raven’s Gate by Anthony Horowitz Book Review

Matthew Freeman always had known he been different, although you wouldn’t have guessed it. At fourteen years old he is fit and intelligent but you also wouldn’t have guessed it from his record. His parents are dead and he lives with his aunt in a rundown part of town. He has no friends at school.

Sometimes Matt seems to know when something is going to happen but before it’s happened. He can’t control his power yet. Matt can do other things too. While living with his aunt, Matt breaks into a warehouse filled with electronic equipment with his friend, Kelvin Johnson and stabs a security guard and gets caught.

After Matt gets caught with him leaning over the security guard’s body he is given a second chance and gets sent to Yorkshire on the L.E.A.F. program. The L.E.A.F. program stands for Liberty and Education Achieved through Fostering. It involves children to be sent to Lesser Mailing in the countryside to get away from the city temptations.

He is placed with a woman named Mrs. Deverill. After Matt is sent on an errand for Mrs. Deverill he is warned by a strange man to get out of Lesser Mailing before it’s too late. Matt takes the warning literally and goes into Mr. Deverill’s room and finds the police reports of his parents’ deaths and a report of his powers.

Later he tries to escape and he discovers a place called Omega One an abandoned nuclear power plant in a forest. At the forest he meets the man who gave him the warning. His name was Tom Burgess. He introduced himself and told Matt to meet him at his house the next day.

The next day Matt goes to Tom’s house and finds he has been murdered. Next to Tom Burgess is two words “Ravens Gate”. Matt takes police officers to the crime scene and finds that the body is not there and the words on the wall had been painted over.

Matt goes down to a library in Lesser Mailing and searches for a book with the name of Raven’s Gate. He finds a book but the chapter on Raven’s Gate has been ripped out. Then Matt searches on the internet and finds a professor who asks his name but then the popup closes. The Librarian refers Matt to the Greater Malling Gazette to find articles on Raven’s Gate.

Matt meets a man called Richard Cole who he tells his story to him but he doesn’t believe him. When Matt is forcefully taken back by Mrs. Deverill to her house he sees lights coming from the Omega One Power plant. Matt heads towards the lights and finds an old witchcraft ceremony site.

The power station lights are on and men are carrying radioactive material into the building. Matt is noticed and Mrs. Deverill summons some dogs from a fire to kill Matt. While Matt is being chased by the dogs he falls into a bog and gets rescued by Richard. Matt and Richard go back to Richard’s house in York.

Richard believes Matt’s story now because he remembers Omega One. After Matt has been trying to find answers it is recommended he meets Professor Sanjay David in London. Matt also finds out that David is part of an organization known as the Nexus.

David tells Matt about the Old Ones. They were dark creatures who survived on human misery many years ago, and once wanted to rule the world, but were transported to another dimension by five children with supernatural powers who were called the gate keepers. The gate keepers built a gate called “Raven’s Gate” to hold back the Old Ones in the other dimension.

Matt finds out that Mrs. Deverill is a part of a group of witches who want to release the Old Ones. David tells Matt that he has inherited the powers of one of the gatekeepers. Mrs. Deverill wants to sacrifice him on the night of the Roodmas when the day of black magic is most powerful.

As professor David goes into his office to contact the Nexus he is cut in the neck and dies. Then all the dinosaurs come alive to kill Matt and Richard.

Matt manages to escape but is then caught again by Mrs. Deverill who animated the dinosaurs to life and Richard is crushed by a dinosaur but lives.

Matt wakes again and finds he is in a barn. He removes a few floorboards and makes a make-shift chisel out of it. Noah Mrs. Deverill’s worker tries to take him to her but he falls through the floorboards and gets stabbed by a knife and dies. Matt runs out of the barn and onto the road. It is the nuclear scientist who built Omega One, Sir Michael Marsh.

Suddenly Matt realizes that Marsh is a traitor. Marsh explains he was the one to buy the uranium for the plant. Matt is taken inside by Marsh and realizes that Omega One is on top of the original gate.  In Omega One Matt sees Richard Cole and sees that he is alive but has been caught by the witches.

They are taken to the inner sanctum, where Matt and the villagers are held in a magical protective circle, but Richard is left outside it to die in the heat.

Marsh reveals to Matt that he needs his blood to complete the opening of the gate to release the Old Ones. Marsh is about to stab the knife into Matt when Matt focuses all his powers and stops the knife. Matt defeats Marsh and frees himself and Richard and goes down to the bottom of the power plant.

Matt and Richard have been followed by Mrs. Deverill. She knocks out Richard but just as she is about to kill Matt, Richard pushes her into a pool of radioactive acid. Matt and Richard escape by jumping into a nearby river. Back in the inner sanctum the station’s levels are at critical mass.

The Villagers panic and run out of the protective circle, killing them all. The only one left is Marsh. He discovers there is a drop of Matt’s blood on the knife and stabs down with the knife causing Raven’s Gate to smash open.

The King of the Old Ones climbs out of the portal and crushes Sir Michael to death. The power station then overloads and explodes but all the heat and radiation is sucked into the gate taking the Old Ones with it. The portal and the Gate are sealed and the Old Ones are once again trapped in their separate dimension.

Matt ends up living with Richard in York.

Evil Star Book Review

After the events with Raven’s Gate Matthew attends a new school by Nexus which they are paying for. Matt is left friendless because of a kid called Gavin Taylor. He is a bully. This causes Matt to use his powers and destroy the chandelier above him and injure him. In the meantime Susan Ashwood and Fabian members of the Nexus try to make Matt steal an important book. Matt refuses.

Meanwhile Gwenda his aunt has fallen under the influences of the dark forces. Gwenda kills Brian under the dark forces and hijacks a petrol tanker. She drives the petrol tanker into the school in a desperate attempt to try and kill Matt. Fortunately, he uses his powers to evacuate the whole school before it even happens. Matt saves their lives.

Then Matt realises he has to be the one to help stop the other gate from opening. Matt agrees to meet Morton at St Meredith’s Church after a meeting with the Nexus. Morton confirms Matt to be one of the five gate keepers. With Morton he has a dairy of importance of where the gates are. In the process of talking to Matt Morton is killed by a man named Diego Salamanda who was another person who wanted the diary to open the second gate.

The Nexus pursues Matt’s destiny. Matt and Richard both fly to Peru and stay at a house belonging to Fabian. On the way to Fabians house at the Hotel Europe, the car Richard and Matt is in is ambushed. Richard is kidnapped but Matt manages to escape with the help of a Peruvian, Pedro.

Matt doesn’t know it yet but Pedro has the powers like Matthew. He is also one of the five gatekeepers. He has the power of healing. Using Pedro’s help he manages to get to the required meeting place.

At the Hotel Europe the required meeting place he is captured by the police at the hotel. The Leader of the police, Captain Rodriguez is the one who brutally beats up Matt. Pedro stays with him over night and helps to save Matt’s life using his powers.

Pedro takes Matt to Poison town the place where Pedro Lives with Sebastian. Although the whole town is prone to die whoever lives close the Pedro is still alive. This is here where Matt meets Sebastian who can speak English unlike Pedro. Sebastian agrees to help Matt.

As Matt is asleep he meets Pedro in his dream again. Pedro reveals himself as one of the five to Matt. Also Matt finds that all the beatings that had been done by Rodriguez have mystically disappeared.

Matt and Pedro travel to his hacienda in Ica, but they are discovered. Salamander reveals to Matt that he wasn’t the one who kidnapped Richard. An Ician, Micos, one of Richard kidnappers helps Matt escape. Unfortunately Micos is killed.

Micos tells Matt to go to Cuzco before he dies. There is where Matt manages to contact the Nexus. Rodriguez meets Matt with police but with the help of the Incas led by Atoc, Micos’ brother.

Matt and Pedro are taken to the Mountain of the Sleeping God Mandago. From there they proceed into the town of the last Incas. There was where Richard had been staying the whole time. It is then when Richard reveals to Matt that he was kidnapped to stop him from reaching the Hotel Europe.

Since Salamander somehow knows all their whereabouts Richard and Matt come to the conclusion that there is a traitor in the Nexus group. At the village Matt discovers that the next gate is in the Nazca Desert.

They all travel to the Nazca Desert with Professor Chambers a person who knows everything Peruvian. The gate will only open once they align with the drawings Matt can see on the desert which is where the second gate is. The star Cygnus is not in its proper position. However, Salamanda has sent a satellite as a substitute star, an evil star, to open the gate.

Matt and Pedro break into Fabian’s headquarters with an Incan army in an attempt to stop his plan by destroying the radio controlling the satellite. At the control centre, it is revealed that Fabian is the traitor in the Nexus, having it almost impossible to stop the satellite.

Rodriguez bursts into the room and shoots Fabian to try and stop Matt and Richard from dying. The Radio tower breaks off and fall on Rodriguez killing him.

Atoc takes Matt and Pedro to the dish in a last attempt to try and stop the dish. As they were flying the helicopter they were shot down and crashed. The crash killed Atoc and broke Pedro’s ankle.

Matt had no choice but to stop the Old Ones by himself. Matt manages to use his powers to destroy the dish and killing Salamander by deflecting the two bullets he shot at him. Although Matt destroyed the dish it was still going to its trajectory.

The Nazca lines crack open and an army of demons arise, before the King of the Old Ones himself appears, and challenges Matt. Matt uses his powers to wound them but he tries himself and falls into a coma. The Old Ones temporarily hide from the world again.

Richard finds Matt and Pedro and takes them to a hospital. Matt remains in a deep coma until Pedro comes and then that is when Pedro knows that he can save him. Pedro has found he is a healer. Matt survives until the next time the Old Ones escape.

New Buildings

Recently our new buildings had been finished. Our new buildings are replacing our old library and our old classrooms. We have been waiting anxiously for about a year now and now they’re finished. Our new classrooms are called Torrens because it is the closest to the Torrens River.

The new buildings have vibrant naturalistic colours and are really modern. Hopefully this week our classes from Morphett will be moving into our new buildings. I am really excited to move into a new building because we have better management of space and a larger area to work.

I wrote down a few positive points about the building…..

  • Larger
  • Modern
  • Spacious
  • More technological

I hope we can move into our new buildings soon because they are awesome.

Homework Reflection

For our last Homework Grid for the term one of our tasks is to listen to a radio station that we don’t listen to. You had to do this for about an hour and then reflect on your thoughts on your blog.  I usually listen to 107.1. Here is my thoughts about a different station.

I recently listened to a radio station called Cruise 1323. The only reason I listened to this station is because it is always on in the car and I was in it. You can look at the website at Cruise 1323. Throughout the hour I listened to this radio station I heard

  • News updates
  • Sport news
  • 90, 80 and 70′s music

The only thing that I thought was most interesting was news because there was some major crash on the radio that we only just passed. I didn’t like some of the music they played because it was not my sort of music but some of the songs were good in the guitar and piano aspect. The sports news bored me becuase I am not into wacthing or listening to sports. I only like to play sports because you are involved in them.

Overall I thought the radio station was ok but I wouldn’t want to listen to it again.

Books vs Ebooks who would you choose

Recently we had to write wether we think ebooks will take over books or not. Comment what you think.

Books .V.s. E-Books – Final Copy

Oh, the irony of writing about E-Books on paper. These days you can find books in two common forms. Books can be red digitally and on paper. E-Books are giving the boot to the paper books.

Books have been around for about a thousand years. Over the times books have evolved. During the period of the 1950’s the paper book evolution peaked. This was because the books changed from black and white to colour.

That was the last time the paper book evolved. Ever since then they have not changed. Books cannot change anymore, unless books go digital.

E-Books are the new – improved and better than ever book. Paper books cannot take the continuous use. On the other hand, the E-Book can be used repeatedly. The E-Book can take continuous use and does not wear out as fast as your common paper book.

Book’s pages are thin and weak. If you had a tantrum throwing person with your beloved book, your book could be gone in a matter of seconds. If they grabbed your E-Book they would not be able to rip it in half unless they had super strength (unlikely).

Some people may argue E-Books are expensive. Well they are right. E-Books can range in the hundreds of dollars but, once you have bought the E-Book device you will not have to pay anymore. Paper books cost money each time you buy them and if you buy a lot of books it can cost more than an E-Book.

Paper books take a long time to get them. Most people buy books two different ways. The first is where he person has to travel to the shop and buy their choice of book. This can take time and a lot of effort. You can also buy books online. Most people these days do not like to wait for things they want at that time but, cannot have them because they will take a few days in the mail to reach them. With the E-Book you can get your choice of book with a click of a mouse in an instant.

E-Books are thin and light. If you are in a school where you have to carry around a ton books, you will not be happy. Most of the time you will be winging, whining and complaining that your back hurts from lugging around all your books when you do not have to. E-Books are the solution. These devices can reduce your ton to 1-2 kilos.

E-Books are the upgrade of the old and boring book. They are lightweight, compact and more durable than an ordinary paper book. Over time E-Books will remove the paper book.

Book Week

Last week atour school was officially Book Week. In Book Week we see authors and we get to dress up as a character from a book that suits the theme. This year’s theme was ‘Across the Story Bridge’ so everyone had to be in the theme of across the story bridge.  As long as you had a part of your book that had a bridge in it , it would qualify.

At the starting of the week on Tuesday we had an author come in called Michael Panckridge. Before he came to our school we had a look at his website and some of his books. We started to read the Immortal by him to get a feel of what he writes like.

On Thursday was when we had our book week parade. That was when we had to dress up as a book characteras long as it stayed in the theme of ‘Across the Story Bridge’. I did not dress up because I did not want to but my friends all dressed up. Couso dressed up as thomas the tank engine and Nayda dressed up as one of the muppets.

We usually have the parade outside but on the day we had to have it in our gym becuase it was too wet outside to sitdown on the ground.

At the end of book week we had to rate the picture book of the year so we could find out who won.

I thought book week went well this year. It was fun and funny during the week. I enjoyed looking at what people were dressed up as for the parade and trying to figure out who they are. Overall it was a good week.
